How Does IVF Work?

Blastocyst

IVF is a sophisticated, meticulously-timed procedure that involves removing a ripened egg or eggs from the woman’s ovary, fertilizing it with semen, incubating the dividing cells in a laboratory dish, and then replacing the developing embryo in the uterus at the appropriate time.

The success and general availability of IVF has brought hope to many infertile couples who have not been able to conceive because of infertility associated with not only blocked or absent fallopian tubes but also male infertility.

We realize that fertility treatment, especially IVF, can often be a difficult and confusing process that affects couples in many areas of their lives. Our IVF program is designed to help support each couple’s unique medical, emotional, and financial needs.

What Are the Benefits of IVF?

  • IVF treatment offers the highest rate of success out of all the treatment options for infertility.
  • IVF is the most complex fertility treatment: from preliminary testing to the completion of a cycle, can last up to two months and requires a significant commitment of time and energy from everyone involved.
  • IVF can suspend the “biological clock” by expediting the conception process for women in their late 30′s and early 40′s.
  • For men with severe male factor infertility, IVF, combined with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), results in success.
  • IVF has helped same sex couples to start families of their own, as well as enabling single women who have not found the right partner to begin their families.
  • The use of donor sperm and donor eggs with IVF allows men and women who would otherwise not have a chance at pregnancy to experience the wonders of pregnancy, birth, and biological parenthood.

PRC’s team of physicians, embryologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals helps each patient make the best treatment plans that meet their individual needs and then guide and support them—medically, emotionally, and financially—through each step of treatment.

How Successful is IVF?

Parents worldwide have used the IVF technique to give birth to more than 4 million babies. Long-term studies show that IVF children are as healthy and intelligent as other children.

The success rate of IVF clinics depends on a number of factors including patient characteristics and treatment approaches. Success rates of individual clinics are published on the web site of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technologies (SART) collects and report statistics for the U.S. fertility clinics.

We encourage you to compare success rates of different clinics. When you do, it is important to know what types of pregnancies are being compared. A chemical pregnancy is one confirmed by blood or urine tests, but a miscarriage may occur before confirmation through an ultrasound. A clinical pregnancy is one verified by ultrasound. After a clinical pregnancy has been verified, a miscarriage may still occur, but it is less likely.

PRC’s IVF success rates are among the highest in the nation; in women 35 and younger, PRC achieves 61.4 percent successful pregnancy rates.
